International Juried Photography Exhibition 2010

 12 12 Gallery's highly successful photography competition, now in its fifth year, opens on November 14th. Please join us Sunday, November 14th from 2-5PM for the artists' reception.  Awards will be presented at 3:30PM. The exhibition closes Sunday, December 19th.

Juror Patrick Amsellem, Associate  Curator of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum selected 48 works by 20 artists from a total of 633 images submitted by 162 photographers from across the globe, including Switzerland, Canada, Israel, Germany, and France. ABOUT THE JUROR

 

Patrick Amsellem joined the Brooklyn  Museum as the Associate Curator of Photography in 2007.  Formerly a curator at the Roosuem Center for Contemporary Art in Malmo, Sweden, Patrick organized the first Swedish exhibition of the work of Andreas Gursky and was part of the curatorial team that introduced a major series of exhibitions under the leadership of Lars Nittve.  He has witten extensively about art for Stockholm's major newspaper Svenska Dagbladet and was also a critic for the Swedish daily newspaper and for Swedish Public Radio. Patrick has taught at New York University and is the author of several exhibition catalogues. He received a Ph.D. in Art History from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.

Women’s International Juried Photography Finalists & Exhibition

12 12 Gallery is proud to join MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts with the Women's International Juried Photography Exhibition 2010.

Opening Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 with an awards presentation and reception for the artists from 2 to 5 PM, the exhibition boasts a wide array of styles and thought provoking images of and by women and will be available at 12 12 Gallery for viewing  until Sunday, June 20th, 2010.

Juror Margaret Salisbury,  "Master Artists" of FIAP (International Federation of Photographic Art), Irish Federation Fellowship, and Royal Photographic Society Fellowship  selected 53 works by 49 artists from a total of 333 images submitted by 88 photographers.

Virginia artists Marti Belcher, Kathy Yost Benham, T. McConville Bryant, Gertraud Fendler, Mary Anne Hensley, Laura Howell, Jessica Jastrzebski, Susan Legge, Donna Roberts, Joy Rosenthal, Caron Sterling, Donna Swanson, and Janine Turner are among the finalists competing for up to $1000 in cash prizes. National Juried Photography Exhibition 2009 Finalists

Julian Cox, Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia has selected 50 works by 49 photographers for 12 12 Gallery's National Juried Photography exhibition.

Of the work chosen Mr. Cox writes:

"The photographers selected for this exhibition employ diverse creative strategies.  What they share in common, however, is a desire to test the descriptive and expressive possibilities of the photographic medium in novel ways. I find in their work a curiosity for subject matter, beauty, vision and wit - which are some of the essential ingredients for a memorable photograph".

Third Annual National Juried Photography Exhibition at 12 12 Gallery

12 12 Gallery's highly successful photography competition, the National Juried Photography Exhibition, is now in its third year!

Juror Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, California, selected 50 works by 33 artists from a total of 826 images submitted by 211 artists from the US, Canada, Mexico, and Italy. Awards presentation and artists' reception on Sunday, October 5th, from  2-5 pm. The exhibition runs through Sunday, November 9th.

Photographers Have Rights Too!

One of the things heard being discussed around the Gallery is what photographers can photograph and what they cannot. Here's a scenario: You are out strolling around, photographing interesting stuff. You come across a terrific landscape that has a complete stranger in it. Without that person's silhouette in the composition, you have no terrific photo. What do you do? Go ahead and take the picture?  And if you do,  do you need the person's permission order to print or sell the photograph?

I've always thought not and in asking around, I've found that ideas and opinions about this vary greatly. So off I went in search of some conclusive answers for myself. In fact, there are, surprisingly, very few restrictions on what and who can be photographed in the public view.

At this point though, I need to make you perfectly aware that although I'm devastatingly savvy, awesomely bright, and a talented writer, I'm not not a lawyer and none of this is legal advice.

A lot of this information was gleaned from attorney Bert P. Krages‘ website, which was chockfull of terrific and useful information about copyright, photography and art law and bunches of other useful stuff. There's even a downloadable PDF called the Photographers Right that covers quick access to your rights and obligations concerning confrontations over photography all in a handy-dandy flyer. So remember! If you have a legal issue, get in touch with a lawyer, not me or 12 12 Gallery!
