"I took these photographs with my eyes closed. By that, I don't
mean that I lowered my lids over my pupils to prevent light form
transmitting the images to me. Rather, these photographs were taken
through an imaginary filter that reveals what is there to be seen in
addition to - or in spite of - the bare images themselves.
Although I took these pictures mostly during the day, they contain nocturnal elements that suggest the sensation of simultaneously being awake and asleep. They document my encounters with scenes that felt intense, sometimes even and strange, yet also oddly familiar. Perhaps they capture dreams that I have yet to experience. Or maybe they seen familiar because I have dreamed of them before. I am not entirely sure about the meaning of these pictures; my subconscious may be trying to get the upper hand." -- Michael Borek
Secret Hours is a series of photographs showcasing North Carolina artist Alison Overton's new foray into the digital photography medium. Created in 2009 and 2010, this body of work reveals a great departure in subject matter, style, and size for her. The new subject matter of the photographs consists of antique dolls and curious objects juxtaposed with unusual flora and fauna. The dolls and other objects are items which Overton found this past year while clearing out her childhood home in Vance County, North Carolina. Her parents collected a variety of things obsessively for decades. For Overton, the objects attracted her as she came to realize that they represented both real and imagined childhood memories, for both her and her parents.
Gallery Centre- Waiting | Lynn Limon | Richmond, VA
"Waiting is a universal and
ubiquitous. Ranging from the mundane to the profound, we wait for a
phone call or we wait for freedom. For Roland Barthes, in A Lover's
Discourse, the waiting for his lover is simultaneously an
enchantment and a delirium. For Vladimir and Estragon of Samuel
Beckett's play Waiting for Godot, after an existentialist wait,
Godot never arrives.
This series of images captured in the Paris Metro encompass waiting for me. On the one hand, in the Metro one simply waits for the train. On the other hand, the benches and chairs can be a metaphor for something more philosophical. In the Concorde station, for example, blue tiles behind the seating spell out the Rites of Man; this is directly under the plaza where French Revolutionaries rioted for their freedom." --Lynn Limon
