The fourth annual 12 12 Gallery National Juried Photography Exhibition opened at 12 12 Gallery on Sunday, October 4th, 2009. The exhibition features 50 works from 49 artists selected by juror Julian Cox, Curator of the High Museum in Atlanta, GA. Over 857 entries were submitted by 230 artists from across the US and Canada. Richmond artists Henrietta Near, George Collier, John Murden, and Susan Worsham joined us for the festivities as well as fellow particpants Yukari Umekawa (Duluth, GA) and Jacquelyn Sicklos (Toronto, ON)
Juror Julian Cox said of the show:
I am attracted to photographs that show an understanding and awareness of the materials and traditions of the medium, while also offering a fresh perspective on a subject or theme. Craft is also very important to me. The photograph should be well made and have integrity as an object.
The photgraphers selected for this exhibition employ diverse creative strategies. What they share in common, however, is a desire to test the descriptive and expressive possibilities of the photographic medium in novel ways. I find their work a curiosity for subject matter, beauty, vision and wit -- which are some of the essential ingredients for a memorable photograph.
We heartily congratulate this year's award winners and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to show their work along with so many other talented and dedicated artists. This year's award winners and the work for which they were awarded are listed below:
