Be one of the founding contributors to The Sketchbook Library by signing up to receive a sketchbook, filling it up with art, and sending it back.

Sketchbooks offers a glimpse into an artist's life, which is why we want to make a publicly accessible library of sketchbooks that people can browse, peruse, and check out. We think that this sketchbook collection has the potential to open a new line of communication between the artist and the viewer, since the experience of making and viewing are both so personal.

Anyone can sign up to receive a sketchbook. Before joining our permanent collection, sketchbooks will be exhibited at select galleries across the US. Each sketchbook will be barcoded and cataloged, allowing visitors to choose what they want to look at via theme, medium, geographic location, name of the artist, etc. Sketchbooks will be show in LA, Brooklyn, Chicago, Atlanta, and St. Louis.

Purdue University Galleries (West Lafayette, Indiana) is currently reviewing proposals for an exhibition of contemporary art relating to the Langston Hughes poem "A Dream Deferred" and contemporary socioeconomic challenges facing minorities in the United States. The exhibition will be presented in the Stewart Center Gallery from January 11 through February 21, 2010 in conjunction with a presentation of "A Raisin in the Sun" at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.

Work must be available to be exhibited at that time. There is no entry fee. All media are eligible, including new and emerging technologies. Exhibit will be curated from submissions and may feature a single artist or group of artists.

VMFA acquires prized German Expressionist art

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A major family collection of German Expressionist art "so rare that it is almost indescribable" has found a permanent home at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The gift-purchase of the Ludwig and Rosy Fischer Collection brings to the museum more than 200 pieces of art from the most creative years of German Expressionism.

Museum Director Alex Nyerges, who deemed it "almost indescribable," says the collection is of "not just national but international importance."

"It is a statement of an era, a statement that cannot really be duplicated. It's a snapshot of time taking us back 100 years to look at one of the most important artistic movements of the 20th century. ... This collection represents it so marvelously."

Works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke, among others, were collected from 1905 to 1925 by Ludwig and Rosy Fischer in Frankfurt, Germany. Half of their collection escaped the Nazis when a son fled to the United States in 1934 before World War II.

Dr. Ernst Fischer moved to Richmond, bringing his art with him, and became chairman of the physiology department at the Medical College of Virginia.

His brother stayed in Germany about a year longer. Max Fischer's half of the collection was "partly sold, partly confiscated and partly lost," Nyerges said.

"That is the typical route for German collections — and Polish collections and Czech collections — that were subjugated to the Nazi regime. It's amazing, absolutely amazing," he said.

Dr. Fischer's wife, Anne Rosenberg Fischer, children and grandchildren agreed to the giftpurchase arrangement 14 years ago.

The plan took effect last year when Anne Fischer died at age 105, after a career in social work and community activism that earned lifetime achievement and humanitarian awards from the Jewish Welfare Campaign, Jewish Federation, Beth Sholom Home, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the YWCA.

The value of the art has increased significantly since the agreement was reached, to the point that "the most valuable painting in the collection is probably worth as much as we paid for the entire collection," said John B. Ravenal, the museum's Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. The amount paid was not disclosed.

N 51°30.806 - W000°00.066 Digital C-Print   Artist's Statement and Bio   Gesche Würfel is a visual artist whose practice is primarily photographic. She engages with spaces in transition through genres of urban, landscape and architectural photography. Her interest lies primarily in the notion of place, the relationship humans have to space, and the methods employed for changing (in)habitable places. Her photographic work is influenced by her experience as an urban planner, and by having lived in diverse settings, from rural to suburban to urban, across Europe and the United States. These background elements contribute to her site-specific photographic approach, which investigates the politics and aims behind developments.     N 51º31.552 - W 000º00.375   The winning image "N 51º30.806 - W 000º00.066" as well as the image "N 51º31.552 - W 000º00.375" are part of the series "London - Luton. The Meridian" (2008-2009) that traces the landscape along the Greenwich Meridian in the Lea Valley, UK. In the 19th century, the Lea Valley provided London with essential raw materials and industrial output that contributed to the power of the British Empire. During this time the Meridian was established as a literal and symbolic expression that this land was the centre of the world. "London - Luton.  The Meridian" explores the evolution of space over time as the Meridian is no longer an important power line. The series shows placid nature, mundane leisure sites, and relics of the industrial past that are no longer teeming with Imperial force. Central to the approach is the concept of Psychogeography, which explores the relationships of place to its social and cultural history.   NW. Takoma Park   Gesche Würfel was born in Bremerhaven in 1976 where she spent her childhood.  After having completed her degree in Spatial Planning from the University of Dortmund, Germany, she worked for several years in the field of regeneration and public participation. She then moved to London to study for an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, where she graduated with a distinction. She currently works and lives in Washington, D.C. Her work has been exhibited widely, among others in the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2007 show, which is an exhibition of the most promising new talent to emerge from art schools across the United Kingdom. Her work has recently been included in the publication "Younger Than Jesus: The Artist Directory", co-published by the New Museum and Phaidon, as part of the exhibition "The Generational: Younger Than Jesus" at the New Museum, New York.

Create A Great Waterfront

The Department of Community Development is hosting a public talk to discuss creating a great waterfront.

The Vice-President of the Project for Public Spaces (PPS), in New York City, is coming to Richmond Thursday, July 16 at 7:30 am to speak on key steps for creating great waterfronts. The public is invited to attend a talk by Ethan Kent followed by a Question-and-Answer session.

As more cities envision their waterfronts as lively public destinations that keep people coming back, PPS outlines the following principles to make that happen. They are not all hard and fast laws, but rules of thumb drawn from 32 years of experience working to improve urban waterfronts around the world. These ideas can serve as the framework for any waterfront project seeking to create vibrant public spaces, and, by extension, a vibrant city.

Call for Entries: National Juried Photography Exhibition

12 12 Gallery is pleased to announce the call for entries for our fourth annual photography competition ,the National Juried Photography Exhibition 2009.  This year's juror is Julian Cox, who currently serves as the Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

Julian Cox  joined the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, as the Curator of Photography in 2005.  Cox came from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles where he served as associate curator in the department of photo-graphs.  He also worked at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford, England, and the National Library of Wales.  He received a Master of Philosophy degree in the history of photography from the University of Wales in 1990, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from the University of Manchester, England, in 1987.

Cox has organized nu-merous exhibitions on subjects ranging from the dawn of photography's invention in Europe in the 19th century, to contem-porary practice in the United States.  He is the co-author, with Colin Ford, of the critically acclaimed publication: Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs (2003), the first catalogue raisonné produced of the work of a photographer. Cox is the author of many scholarly articles and several books. His recent publications include: Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968 (2008), Harry Callahan: Eleanor (2007), Spirit into Matter: The Photographs of Edmund Teske (2004) and Timekeeper: The Photographs of Anthony Friedkin (2004).

Manchester National Juried Fine Art Exhibition 2009: Award Winners

The third annual MNJFAE 2009 opened at 12 12 Gallery on Sunday, June 28th, 2009. The All Media exhibition  features 71 works from 40 artists selected by juror Andrea Pollan, Director and Curator of the Curator's Office, Washington, D.C.  Over 400 entries were submitted by 123 artists from across the US and Canada. In attendance were Jane Vaught (Richmond, VA), Alex Graebic (Farmville, VA), Jordi Williams (Lynchburg, VA), Amy Carmichael Smith (Silver Spring, MD)and Erwin Barona (Ontario, Canada).

Juror Andrea Pollan said of the show:

It is always a pleasure and an honor to be asked to jury an exhibition, particularly a national one as it is impossible to get around the country and see this much work in such a concentrated fashion. Small works carry their own gem-like intensity. The scale of small works calls for particular skill in rendering an image legible. Of the 415 works submitted, I culled it down to the 71 works on view. The last stages of selecting an exhibition are always the most difficult as one inevitably sacrifices some good work. Clearly artistic quality was the primary consideration in my selections. Generally I was trying to avoid work that looked too commercial, prosaic, or clichéd, given my background as a contemporary art curator. 

In addition to painting, drawings, and prints, this exhibition presents quite a bit of photography because there were numerous strong photographic submissions. Actually, almost 2/3 of the show is photography. Some may consider this a bias on my part, although I consider myself an equal opportunity curator for all media. It was clear that this show attracts good photographers, and the medium has taken its place as one of great importance since its inception in the 1830s, but it has had a long art historic battle to get here. 

The awards include works in all media. First prize goes to the extremely tight and powerful photographic composition by Gesche Wuerfel. I also admired its conceptual conceit, titled as it was by longitude and latitude. I awarded Second prize to the witty and eccentric drawings of Art McSweeney, whose work has a its finger on the pulse of a collective anxiety about the mechanization of the world. Third prize goes to the haunting portrait of a sister by Maron Resur. The acidic colors emphasize the internalized melancholic psychological stat of the model. Fourth prize goes to Jane Vaught for her formalist Denkmal series of photographs. These convey the authority of structure and direction with a poetic eye. Honorable mentions go to painters Claire Feng for her simple lush painterly portrait of a man with a beard and Leslie Lusardi for her alternate take on the landscape/cityscape tradition and how we mostly experience these in transit in contemporary life.
